Gistra of Mercere was born in Rome in 1170 to poor merchant parents. Her beloved mother died when she was eight, leaving her with her abusive father. She took to spending time with the street rats. Her powerful charisma and large spiked club soon led her to a position of leadership. By fourteen, she'd organized and trained her growing gang so much that they were able to absorb or drive out the opposing gangs and control the streets in her district. Through careful application of threats and instilling amazing loyalty, she slowly raised most of her followers to legitimate guild positions. Her future was assured.
At seventeen, her world collapsed. A lieutenant, his advances spurned for the last time, called in dark powers and cursed Gistra. Her confidence and charisma broken and her loyal followers and friends confused, she left Rome for the first time. Three years later, she was discovered by house Mercere teaching swarm fighting techniques to gladiators in the hills outside of Naples. They had been searching for the lost daughter of a Roman Redcap, and it turned out to be Gistra's mother. She was apprenticed immediately.
During her apprenticeship, she did as much teaching as learning. She trained Mercere's troops to fight as one, and learned all she could of the mechanics of magic. She was fascinated especially by the tactics of magical combat. Her education complete, she left Harco to revisit Rome.
The covenant at Rome received her with open arms and she took to the profitable business to tutoring Magi in Magic Theory. She reinvested their payments into library rights and her knowledge grew even deeper. 15 years later, she was a respected asset of the Rome covenant, but materially quite poor. She decided it was time to go into private business. An apprentice was eager to learn what she could teach and willing to pay twice the going rate, so she joined him in a long term partnership. After the five year stint, she'll be able to retire in style.
